I have also always wondered about this and about the fact in many cases this room was confused with the so-called office. Yet, reports at the time spoke of a wall safe and other things that I don't believe were in that "make do" room beside Kato's room.
And I have seen a video of a walk thru of the house after OJ moved and the furniture was gone and could never 'find" such a room as a den that locked.
In spite of claims, the house was not all that special in comparison to other houses there. It was in a run down condition as really showed when the furniture was removed.
The house (except for having the tennis court out back) wasn't even large or on a very large lot.
It reminded me of another person whose house was like that and who had kept it for sentimental reasons. I went to Graceland years ago and toured it. It might look "spectacular' in photos but is far from it. Graceland (except for the additions that they made to the side later to accomodate the relatives who came to live there) is a very small house. The "living room" itself is no bigger than the one in my house.
It was the house of a formerly poor but quickly wealthy young man who bought the house for his mother to impress her and she didn't live to really appreciate it. But he kept it.
The basement is down the old narrow steps that you find in a million older homes in the Eastern part of the USA. It is the old concrete and black walls. It was "covered" up with material on the walls to hide that.
He could have afforded a better house later (Elvis that is) but never did get another.
I think OJ did the same thing. A poor boy who made good bought that house and it was a symbol to him of his new wealth and position. Like Elvis, who built more onto the sides of the house, OJ built the rooms and maid's room out back to accomodate the other children and relatives who came to stay or visit.
I am not too sure this house would have even had a den and an office as two separate rooms.
And for years, hundreds of people had been welcomed there for parties etc. not least was Ron Shipp that could easily have gotten a "master key' out of the deal when he provided "security" for the parties, etc.
OJ probably felt attached to the house as well since his daughter died there in a drowning accident.
It was a nice home but far from a "mansion". Like Elvis's house whose basement with the entertainment room and pool room would fit into one half of my basement and you have to duck your head going down the narrow one person steps to keep from knocking yourself out on the overhead framing of the steps.
I don't believe the house was nearly so secure (OJ"s that is) as they would like us to believe.
