Rose,
This is not a dumb question. It is also one that cannot be answered directly.
Charlie and I went through this at length when I was working on The Smoking Gun. We had a hard time with it but we stayed with it just because it was so odd and so obviously important to Fuhrman. It takes up an entire page in his book with no explanation of what it’s supposed to represent or why it’s there.
The wilted condition of the delphiniums and the moisture in the folds of the paper seem to say that they had been there for a couple of days and somebody unfolded the paper on this particular day to take the picture. But that is only what things look like on the surface. When you take into account Fuhrman’s art background, the fresh condition of the larkspur on the ground and the full picture of Fuhrman pointing to the glove with Nicole’s body in the foreground you get something else.
The premise of The Smoking Gun was that Fuhrman got his ideas for the killing and the frame-up mostly from the movies. In his book, where I got the photo of the scene with the flowers and the poem (signed Adam and ?), he makes one reference after another to the movies. He does this not only to explain why he said what he did on the McKinny tapes but also to use as metaphors in other portions of his book. That photo is a symbolic representation of the killing cage with associations to a slew of movies.
Click on The Smoking Gun book cover. Scroll down to the last item (Photo Gallery) and click on it. You will see two photos side by side. The one on the upper left is the posed picture with the unfolded paper, the flowers, the doll and somebody’s knee. Charlie figured out that it was taken outside of the gate on the left-hand side of the walk. The photo on the right was taken inside of the killing cage on the right-hand side where Fuhrman’s hand appears in the long shot in place of the unidentified knee. I superimposed white rectangles on that photo to show the relative position of the paper, and the doll. You can now see that the two photos are mirror images of each other.
When I was researching for the Smoking Gun some of the movie associations took on lives of their own with certain themes that Fuhrman put in his book for no apparent reason occurring again and again. The larkspur was one of them. Purple flowers of all kinds like the wilted delphiniums in the photo were another. I found a disproportionate number of blood and water links or water symbolizing blood and mirrored images. The photo with the “mothers” poem has all of those elements.
The thing that cinched it for me was the drawing on the paper that is apparently supposed to look like a falling larkspur like the one on the ground. These are ink colors – the same ink colors that Fuhrman used as a wash for the flesh tones on the eighth page of his picture section. That’s the first diagram that Fuhrman drew of Goldman’s wounds. --Jasper
