Thanks for reminding me about Emanuel Margolis. However, I don’t know whether that helps clarify the coincidence or not unless we know how Margolis came up with Sherman.
Perhaps this is neither a coincidence nor an orchestrated plot of some kind because the probabilities involved may be higher than they first appear.. When you’re dealing with the rich and famous you are bound to find mutual connections now and then because of the relatively small pool of group members. Many of them live in the same communities, belong to the same country clubs, attend the same social function and one-thousand-dollar a plate fundraisers for the same charities and political parties. They undoubtedly have some of the same lawyers and private investigators simply because they can afford the best and the “best,” by definition, comprise a small fraction of the total.
The famous psychologist and sociologist Stan Milgram (Iago Appendix, page 617) did a study in the ’70s that showed only “six-degrees of separation” between everyone on earth. That’s how the movie with a guy posing as the illegitimate son of a famous actor gets its name. In other words, everyone knows somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody else who knows anybody you can think of.
In the circles that Dunne has been moving in for over half a century there can’t be many people who’ve made the news that he isn’t linked to by more than one or two personal contacts. If it hadn’t been the Sherman connection to Paula Barbieri it might have been a Margolis connection to Keith Zlmsowitch or a Coleman connection to Faye Resnick. There are as many possibilities as there are people involved in both cases.
Dunne works at making these contacts. So does Fuhrman. That’s why I was so interested in the symbolism of the Masons and the Eastern Star that crop up in so many movies, including Murder in Greenwich, that are connected to Mark Fuhrman. That’s why I limited the connections I made from movie to movie in The Smoking Gun to no more than two generations from something that Fuhrman said or did to show that they were significant to him. After that, the associations become meaningless.
When I wrote Milgram, Magic and Murder, I was looking mostly at Fuhrman’s record of researching psychology for his disability case and the extent to which he used another one of Milgran’s famous experiments to influence so many people in the Bundy murders. To do everything I speculated at the time that he might have done he also needed contacts in many areas. His friendships with Ron Shipp and Ron Phillips and his involvement in the Gang/Narcotics squad and the Police Protective League gave him those connections. Old military buddies would be another source (does anybody know if Brad Roberts was a Marine?) The Bundy Murders gave him Lucianne Goldberg and Dominick Dunne.
I agree with the search engine problem. I ran into the same thing. You can’t get anywhere on a search engine unless your search involves the most popular links to a subject. Type in O.J., OJ or Fuhrman and see how many times Smartfellowspress pops up. --Jasper
