Fuhrman’s story about not seeing Nicole’s face during his ’84 visit because she had her face in her hands didn’t appear until O.J.’s murder trial. Take another look at what he wrote in his ’89 letter to the city attorney (Murder in Brentwood, page 187). Look at what he DIDN’T WRITE. He wrote nothing about Nicole’s face in her hands.
In Murder in Brentwood Fuhrman DOES go out of his was to say that he couldn’t see her face on the murder scene (page 12: “Her head hung limply, with blood-stained hair hiding her face.”…page 15: “The female victim’s head was resting with her chin on her upper chest – or so it appeared, but her hair was obscuring her face.”). On page 16 Fuhrman says, “The initial indications were that the female victim was O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife, but that could not be verified yet, and I was not about to jump to conclusions.” Does he then say that he took a look so that he would know for sure? No. He goes on to talk about a bunch of other things and never gets back to who identified Nicole.
Fuhrman plays games with time, too.
According to Murder in Brentwood, Bushey talked to Phillips about making death notification to O.J. as well as making arrangements for his kids after Lange arrived a 4:25. Bushey actually gave that order at 2:30 around the time Chief Frankel relieved West LA and put RHD in charge. Bushey testified that wanted the detectives to make the death notification in person because he remembered the John Belushi situation in which the news of his death hit the media before the police told his family. He testified that he didn’t want to repeat that experience.
There is a point at which even Fuhrman’s most devoted fans have to concede that he did too much in the case than one could explain away with great detective work or pure coincidence. Being the one who identified Nicole’s body AND told Bushey about the kids’ custody arrangement could have put him too close to that point in his own mind; thus all the effort to obscure the facts. What do you want to bet that he or Phillips also told Bushey about Fuhrman’s trip to Rockingham in ’84? –Jasper
