The interesting thing to me about Sweeny, from Shipp and Fuhrman’s point of view, is that he DID fit the profile of the kind of man Fuhrman and Shipp tried to make O.J. out to be. Fuhrman did it through his ’89 letter to the city attorney and his ’92 barroom claims of having an affair with Nicole in which she told him about O.J.’s “escalating” violence. Shipp did it after the Bundy murders through his “Leo” alias in Sheila Weller’s Raging Heart and through his testimony in O.J.’s criminal trial.
Sweeney WAS an obsessively jealous and controlling man, who abused his domestic partner (Dominique), escalated his violence against, staked her and went on to murder her. He did all of this, including the fatal stabbing, in front of numerous witnesses who had nothing to gain by their testimony.
According to Fuhrman and Shipp, they met and became friends in 1985, the same year that Fuhrman struck up a friendship that became a partnership and a love affair with Laura Hart.
Whether or not Shipp was directly involved in the Dominique Dunne case, I think that you have hit upon the link between Dominick Dunne and Fuhrman that preceded Dunne’s ’93 Season in Purgatory. The mere fact that Shipp was an instructor on the subject of domestic violence at the Police Academy made every high-profile murder of a Hollywood celebrity by a jealous ex in the early ’80s (Dorothy Stratton and the model who did the Blue Nunn commercials) relevant to his course. At some point it is highly likely that he touched base with someone involved in the Dominique Dunn case or someone touched base with him. There was no need for a direct encounter between Dunne and Shipp to catch Fuhrman’s attention….
Roberts looks older than Fuhrman. I don’t know that he is. In any event, Det. 2 Fuhrman was a grade above him in rank in 1994. Roberts was a Det. 1, that’s a rookie detective. He could not have been involved in the Dominick Dunne murder case as a detective. He could have been involved as a patrolman. So could any number of other cops that Fuhrman knew from his various job assignments in the LAPD, his bar room buddies and his leadership position in the Police Protective League.
Fuhrman’s ambition to become a celebrity crime writer like Dominick Dunne, Dunne’s articles about the Moxley murder in Vanity Fair and Fuhrman’s wealth of connections in the Department as well as thorough Laura Heart is more than enough for me. There were just too many roads leading Fuhrman to Dunne in the ’80s for one of them not to have taken him there. –Jasper
