Miss Marple,

Andrea Mazola put her initials on the coin envelope that contained the paper bindle. Inside of the bindle was a cloth swatch that she used to collect the blood drop (one of the blood drops she took from the “Bundy blood trail” on the walk leading to the back gate).

The cloth swatch inside the paper bindle, which was inside of the coin envelope WITHOUT her initials, showed the wet transfer stains. That’s what makes the sample switching more than speculation – coupled, of course, with the blood missing from O.J.’s reference vial. The irregularities in the time-in logs and the inconsistent testimony about who came in and out of the testing area and at what times narrows the time and place of the switch to Piper Tech.

A couple of other things…

I agree with Prien completely that the killing and the frame-up were different aspects of the same plan and that it was conceived and executed in large part for the reasons he stated. However, O.J.’s cut finger meant that the blood evidence associated with that cut had to have been improvised.

The lab had a key-card entry system. Any of the lab personnel could therefore let anyone else inside. The only people they were authorized to let in were lead detectives in a case that they were working on. It was a common practice to do so. That’s why I say someone let Fuhrman in, thinking that he qualified because he was still active on the case. For that reason, Matheson, Fung, Yamauchi or Lange could have let him in as a common courtesy. The questions about Fuhrman’s Rockingham glove “discovery” and the timing of the pointing finger photo on Bundy didn’t come until August when Steven Singular got involved.

I don’t think that Matheson, Fung, Yamauchi or Lange had anything to do with a switch. If they were working in concert, Lange would not have been or record as being there (an obvious suspect). If Fung or Matheson were part of a sample-switching conspiracy, they would have used the same coin envelope that Mazola initialed. They would also have given that swatch as much time to dry as the others before putting it in a clean bindle as they did the other samples. In other words, if any of the lab people had been involved in the switch the only evidence of it would have been the EDTA in the sample.

Different phases of the testing were done at different times in different areas. The tests for DNA were done in a room at LAPD headquarters in Parker Center. Yamauchi spilled some of O.J.’s blood (not enough to account for all that was missing) on his worktable at Piper Tech. A room inside of the Piper Tech lab (supposedly open to view) was used for drying the samples. As near as I can tell from Matheson’s testimony, the entry and exit logs were for this room. –Jasper
