I have been reading Rosa Lopez' testimony and learned a lot. You were right, Jasper, that she mentioned hearing the voices and noices about midnight and after. I'm still not totally convinced that those are actually her times.
I was apalled by Darden's treatment of Rosa during the cross examination. Rosa said it best when she had been unresponsive to a question and Darden said "you didn't answere that to Mr. Johnny's question, did you" and she said "because he asked me a different way". Darden made fun of Rosa's way of adressing people with their first name, insinuating a close realtionship, when in fact that is how everybody adress each other in South America. It's a shame that a witness could be treated like a criminal, having all kinds of accusations thrown into her face.
What came out loud and clear to me, but was not mentioned, was that Rosa is illiterate. She went to school sporadically for four years, and worked in the fields with her parents from she was nine. When she was shown a document she said that yes she understood some of it. She probably didn't understand any of it. She didn't lie about the the application for unemployment, how could she have filled out those forms. Her son, whose adress was listed on the form, probably did.
When Rosa was "cought in a lie" about her plane reservation, she had only done what she always had done to stay out of trouble. If you ask your maid if she has watered the plants, she will say "si, si", and then go do it. It is accepted behaviour and it works. The plants get watered. In Rosa's mind the plane reservation had been made when she was about to go do it.
A couple of things managed to come out though, through all the attempted confusion. Rosa, even though she didn't see it at 10.15, did see the Bronco just after 10.00. That means that the cell phone calls to Barbieri 10.02 and 10.13 were not made en route to Bundy, as suggested in the "rage scenario".
She also said that the Bronco was parked the same way in the same spot at about ten as it was the next morning, when again she took the dog out. That means that the Pavelic's error in assuming the 10.15 time doesn't matter at all. The Bronco was parked in the same way at the same spot from about ten till the next morning.
She thought fuhrman's name was "frame man". That was good.
She said the Salinger's gardener started mowing the lawn at 8 o'clock. Was that the reason fuhrman wanted to return later?
And she told about the barking akita at the time she heard the voices and noices. That answers the question why the akita didn't bark at the detectives when fuhrman returned with them at five. The dog recognized him. Vanatter made a useless comment about the dog, that he was afraid of it because he had three time been bitten. Words, words.
