If you read the transcripts of
Lange and Vannatter's "interview" with O.J. on the afternoon following the
murders you will see that the detectives were not interested in learning anything that
might be exculpatory. The object of the game (and it was a game with them) was to trick
O.J. into saying something incriminating by asking him questions that they thought they
knew the answers to already.
They were proceeding under the assumption that O.J. wore the same clothes to the murder scene that he wore to his daughter Sydney's dance recital a few hours earlier. Their questions about his clothes were designed to make him sweat when they mentioned them and to contradict himself in ways that would appear damning in court. They were clearly working from inside information. In Lange and Vannatter's Evidence Dismissed Lange reveals that he was deeply impressed with Denise Brown's accusatory reaction to his notification that Nicole had been killed. He made a mental note to talk to her again. The questions that Lange and Vannatter asked O.J. about his clothes suggest that he did talk to her. The record is not clear about when or where Denise told detectives that she saw O.J. wearing the killer's shoes, but she did not tell them at this time that she had seen O.J. wearing Bruno Magli Lorenzos. However, she was one of the people at the recital who could have given a verbal description of the shoes before they were identified by the FBI. Unfortunately, photos are not available of the shoes that O.J. wore to the recital Brand X suede high-tops with rubber souls. However, as you can see, the verbal description matches the killer's Bruno Magli Lorenzos. Presumably, the verbal description was all that Vannatter and Lange had to work with at the time. The photo didn't surface until the criminal trial seven months later. By then Denise and her sister Dominique had told police that they had seen O.J. wearing the Lorenzos. Dominique told Detective Lange that she had seen him wearing them the previous Easter. No public record is available of where and when Denise said that she saw him wearing them.
O.J. also wore a dark blue jean jacket to the recital and to McDonald's with Kato. He wore a stonewashed blue jean jacket to the airport. The color of the jacet Officer Riske found in Nicole's kitchen and discussed with Det. Fuhrman was not disclosed. When Fuhrman left the kitchen the jacket disappeared.
